NM State Hawk and Knife
Saturday April 17 is the date for this year’s New Mexico State Hawk and Knife Competition. The event will be held in the Torrance County Park beginning at 10am. First place men, women, and junior’s knife and hawk will be prized if six or more compete in each category. However, if fewer than six in any group are present, then they will move into an open match. The overall winner of the competition takes home the traveling trophy until next year with the opportunity to add to its appearance. So far, Strawstalker and Pack Mule have shared the trophy. Maybe this will be your year! Don’t forget that April can be a little windy and chilly so come prepared. Sure would like to have a good turnout this year. If you’re from out of the area, call one of the officers and we’ll find place to put you up for the weekend. The more the merrier!
Beginner’s Muzzleloader Shoot
How about a beginner’s muzzleloader shoot for the kids (and older)? The NMMM, along with the NMBHGC, is planning to host just such an event Saturday May 8. The NMMM will provide the instructors, firearms and accoutrements. This type of event has been done by the NMBHGC’s rendezvous committee each spring for the last several years and has been well attended and a lot of fun. Several 4-H and Scout groups have already expressed interest in attending the shoot. We’ll need volunteers to come out, with gear, to show new folks how to safely enjoy shooting a muzzleloader. The shoot will start at 10am and run till 2pm. Call Pack Mule if you can help out.
Thanks to Ron Peterson’s
The NMMM would like to extend a hearty THANK YOU to Ed Dresner and Ron Peterson’s Gun Shop for donating two nice muzzle loading rifles to Sue West’s 4-H program. The Torrence County 4-H has a shooting program which encompasses air rifles, .22’s, shotguns, and muzzleoaders. Participants compete at the local, state, and national level. Too many kids and not enough stuff has been a chronic problem. Ed presented a request to Peterson’s asking for a donation to help out, and Ron did so big time. Nothing fancy, but reliable and sturdy. The kids are in need now of shooting bags. If you have a spare bag you could donate, or make one, the kids could sure use it. Contact Tatonka.
Dates for Ham and Turkey Shoots
The dates have been set and approved for this year’s ham and turkey shoots. The ham shoot will be held on Sunday September 12 and the turkey shoot Sunday November 14. If you have never come out for one of these shoots, or just not lately, do so this year. They are a lot of fun and you only pay for the events you enter. With a little luck, you’ll enter twice and win two hams or turkeys. If you’d like to come out a day early or stay over till Monday, again call an officer and we’ll find you a place to stay.
Our insurance premium is due for 2004. The fee went up by $50 to $425 for the year.
GOEX powder has arrived. The cost to members will be $10 a pound.
The NMMM would like to thank the Peso Primitive Shooters for keeping the NMMM on their mailing list and sharing in the news. Always good to hear from you.
